The monk in raster format before processing the monk in lines after processing This aligns the stroke width of the pictures with the characters, ensuring a proper match. ![]() ![]() Before this stage, the images are thinned to achieve a uniform stroke width of one pixel. The raster image processing phase presents some challenges as we had to balance collecting reasonable curves and maintaining as many details from the input as possible. This transformation minimizes distortion during the subsequent process of redrawing the images to pixel art according to size. Most of our inputs come in the form of raster graphics, which represent images as grids of tiny square pixels. Although raster graphics is a very popular format, it has a significant drawback when it comes to retaining the shape of the images during resizing. Therefore, the initial task involves converting the inputs into vector images, which are made of points, lines, and curves based on mathematical equations. This project involves the implementation of the paper “Structure-based ASCII Art” by Xuemiao Xu, Linling Zhang, and Tien-Tsin Wong, published in ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH 2010 issue), Vol. Additionally, we will discuss the challenges encountered and our ongoing efforts to optimize the algorithm. Throughout this blog post, we will explore the various stages involved in this project, including processing pixel images, preparing font images, and the crucial image-matching phase. Users can upload their images and specify the parameters, including the font, font size, and the number of characters for the output’s width, to get the generated ASCII art. ASCII art can be divided into two types: tone-based, which decides the output characters based on the density of the image, and structure-based, which determines the result by matching characters with the outline shape of the image.Īs one of our two research projects this summer, we are working on the implementation of structure-based ASCII art generation. The input picture can be anything from a complex image to simple emoticons. Ilinkin’s lab! Its carbon capture process at each property it’s installed in is coupled with carbon management software that provides real-time data and analytics to verify, measure, and report CO 2 emissions to third-party verifiers, auditors, and regulators. If we decide to “solar geoengineer” the Earth-to spray highly reflective particles of a material, such as sulfur, into the stratosphere in order to deflect sunlight and so cool the planet-it will be the second most expansive project that humans have ever undertaken. CarbonQuest sells this trademarked Sustainable CO 2 to companies that are focused on carbon utilization and sequestration.įor example, the Sustainable CO 2 from Glenwood’s properties is earmarked to be sold to Glenwood Mason Supply (unaffiliated with the developer), a New York-based masonry firm, which will sequester the CO 2 permanently in concrete blocks.ĬarbonQuest’s modular systems comes in several sizes to support different building types and applications. Subsequent to this capture, the CO 2 undergoes a multistage process that isolates carbon dioxide from nitrogen and oxygen, and cools the CO 2 to a liquid state that gets stored in a bulk tank. It works this way: CarbonQuest’s proprietary technology captures CO 2 from a building’s flue exhaust before it escapes as a greenhouse gas. The company estimates that its system can eliminate more than 1,000 tons of CO 2 emissions per building per year. Onsite natural gas combustion generates more than half of total building CO 2 that represent between 60 and 90 percent of total emissions in cities globally, states CarbonQuest. From gas to liquidġ930 Broadway in New York City, where Glenwood Management first installed CarbonQuest's system. “A growing number of property owners are evaluating our carbon capture technology, and we are excited to continue partnering with forward-thinking real estate operators to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment,” says Brain Asparro, COO of CarbonQuest, which was founded in 2019 in Seattle. Other cities, such as Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago, are traveling on the same regulatory path. Based on their current carbon use, Glenwood’s properties would incur penalties of about $7 million between 20 without CarbonQuest’s technology, and another $15 million in penalties from 2030 through 2034. ![]() This rollout is occurring in anticipation of New York City’s Local Law 97, which in 2024 will start penalizing buildings over 25,000 sf that don’t meet new energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission limits that will get even stricter in 20. Having deemed the pilot a success, CarbonQuest is now installing its decarbonization technology into another five of Glenwood’s multifamily New York properties: The Fairmont at 300 East 75th Street, The Paramount Tower at 240 East 39th Street, The Bristol at 300 East 56th Street, The Barclay at 1755 York Avenue, and The Somerset at 1365 York Avenue. This modular system, installed in the building’s parking garage, took up the equivalent of just three parking spaces.Īt the time of that installation, CarbonQuest’s CEO Shane Johnson said the system was expected to eliminate about 25 percent of the building’s annual carbon dioxide emissions with zero interruption to tenants, with the longer-range goal of cutting between 60-70 percent of the building’s emissions. ![]() In early 2022, the developer and property manager Glenwood Management, working with CarbonQuest, which specializes in turnkey solutions to reduce CO 2 emissions from buildings, initiated what was touted as the first commercially operational building carbon capture on the market, at Glenwood’s 30-story 377,564-sf 232-apartment Grand Tier building at 1930 Broadway in New York City, which opened in 2005. ![]() To address the topic adequately would require a shelf of books in half a dozen fields. It further suggests that this misunderstanding has created problems in how the art is generally taught in schools at every level of education. This essay examines what seems to me a current misapprehension about the nature of poetry. Private inspiration may be the stuff of poetry, but it is toxic to criticism. A little recklessness goes a long way, but sometimes literary culture needs to go a long way, too. Often reckless by scholarly standards, their criticism attempts to open new conversations rather than annotate and negotiate old ones. They also view poetry as a foundational element of education. They share a conviction that poetry-both its creation and reception– has great human importance that needs to be not merely understood but periodically renewed as a spiritual capacity. Nonetheless there is something interesting going on in the speculative work of these outsiders besides prophetic delusion or bard-envy. At their worst moments, as in Graves’s The White Goddess or Bly’s Iron John, they have claimed visionary authority. They relied mostly on experiential argument, mythic allusion, historical analogy, and personal narrative, often peppered with amateur anthropology or psychology. To put it mildly, these poets have not written in the language of academic discourse. ![]() That is probably why the poet-critics who have made the most persuasive claims on the primal aspects of verse have mostly been outsiders, such as Ezra Pound, Robert Graves, Edwin Muir, Kathleen Raine, William Everson, Robert Bly, Les Murray, Wendell Berry, and-to name one non-poet-Camille Paglia. There are too few hard facts and too many value judgments involved to make this a safe area of academic inquiry. Anyone with an advanced degree in literary studies knows there is no professional future in trying to connect the art of poetry with its putative human purposes. ![]() There often seems something crude or naïve about essentialist views of poetry. What comes next? A damsel with a dulcimer? The horns of Elf-land faintly blowing? That very word should cause responsible readers to cringe. Lacking a more stylish appellation, I’ll borrow an antiquarian term, enchantment. It is a topic so remote from contemporary literary studies that there is no respectable critical term for it. This essay explores one of those disreputable subjects, one that I’m quaint enough to consider important, perhaps essential, to the art of poetry. Some topics have been neglected so long that they now seem not merely unfashionable but quaint, eccentric, even disreputable. As scholars and critics pursue the themes and theories of the moment, other subjects remain overlooked. There is such an enormous amount of poetry criticism and poetic theory published at present that it seems impossible that any significant topic is neglected.
